Berlin City

Our year-round course center in the capital of Germany

Reichstag
Schüler im Unterricht

A city of superlatives

Not only is Berlin Germany’s largest city with over 3 million residents, it is also its liveliest. With its numerous universities, colleges, and research institutes, Berlin is the country’s most important economic, cultural, and educational center. Each year, key film festivals, concerts, and theater premiers are held in the city, which is also home to such world-famous landmarks as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the illustrious shopping district along the Kurfuerstendamm.

Berlin's restored splendor

Since the reunification of Germany, the new and old capital of Germany has been restored to outshine even its former splendor - no small achievement considering that until the outbreak of World War II the city's splendor was world famous and unsurpassed in Europe.

A perfect place to learn the German language

Berlin is probably the most cosmopolitan and international of all German cities, and it is certainly a perfect place for our young course participants from all over the world to not only learn the language here, but also find out more about German history, politics and culture, while at the same time enjoying all the many great opportunities this amazing city has to offer: music events, movie theaters, museums, sightseeing, shopping, sports, bars, beer gardens and discos.

Our latest year-round course center

Our first year-round course center in the North of Germany offers a multitude of cultural experiences and encounters in the most international and history-laden city in Germany. Berlin is Germany's cultural, political and economical hub.

Offers for commuters

In addition to our courses with accommodation, Berlin City offers German courses in the morning* and in the evening* as well as on Saturdays* for commuters.

You are welcome to have your German language skills tested at our institute before course commencement. The test fee is 15,- € and will be credited towards the total amount of the course fees when you enroll. Please call the following number to make an appointment for the test: +49 (0) 30 5551 3221. Alternatively, you can put your knowledge to the test doing our online test. The online test is only a rough guideline, it does not replace the placement test on the first course day.

Two cities – one course

With the combination of courses in Berlin and Constance our learners have the incomparable opportunity to experience two uniquely distinct university towns which demonstrate the diversity of Germany in landscape and in culture. Berlin – Germany’s capital and by far largest city – impresses with more than 3.3 million inhabitants and an incredible variety of sights and cultural offers. Constance, however, seems to be unhurried and laid-back with only 85,000 inhabitants, while it is rated as one of Germany’s towns with the highest quality of life due to its gorgeous location right next to Lake Constance and its proximity to Switzerland and the Alps.

Intercity bus transfer between the cities (Constance–Berlin or Berlin–Constance) is included in the course fee.

* For students requiring visas: no visa will be granted for programs involving fewer than 18 course hours per week.

Exciting Berlin

Berlin is such an exciting city with such an amazing range of options on how to spend the free afternoons and evenings, that it is practically impossible to feel bored there.

Historic sights in Berlin

On the one hand, there are all the important sights that one should visit to get a glimpse of the important role that Berlin has always played in Germany's history: Brandenburg Gate, once the symbol of the separation, and now the symbol of reunification of the two Germanies; the Reichstag, the German Parliament with the new glass dome, a perfect blend of historical and modern architecture; the remnants of the Berlin Wall, the many memorials (like the new Holocaust Memorial), the various palaces, or the brand new government buildings like the “Kanzleramt”, to name a few.

Museums and more

On the other hand, there are world-renowned museums like the ones on the Museum Island, the Pergamon Museum, the Old Museum, the German Historical Museum, the Bauhaus, the Collection of Egyptian Art. Apart from the many concerts, theaters, cultural events, movie theaters, bars, beer gardens and discos, you can also play all types of sports, or stroll down the Kurfürstendamm, one of Berlin's busiest shopping streets, or take a boat trip on the river Spree and the Havel lakes or simply go on an outing to Wannsee and Grunewald, oases of tranquility ideal for those quiet afternoons in the sun.

Leisure time activities

Apart from offering an interesting leisure program to our course participants (which is included in the course fee, except for admission charges), we are also happy to help them organize their own activities.

The following list gives some examples of leisure time activities that are possible in Berlin:

  • Barbecue
  • Basketball
  • Concerts*
  • Disco*
  • Galleries*
  • Internet
  • Movie theaters*
  • Museums*
  • Soccer
  • Swimming*
  • Tennis*
  • Theater*
  • Zoo*

Entrance fees and offers marked with * are not included in the course fee.

Full-day excursions

Every Saturday, we offer our course participants full-day excursions to interesting cities or sights, which are included in the course fee, except for entrance fees. Possible destinations are:

  • Dresden

The famous capital of Saxonia in the East of Germany is famous for its world renowned “Zwinger Palace” and the city’s eclectic opera house “Semperoper”, as well as the recently restored “Frauenkirche”, which had been destroyed in World War II and had been kept in ruins as a war-memorial.

  • Potsdam

Another possible destination for our weekend excursions is Potsdam, called one of the most beautiful cities of Germany, and famous for Sanssouci Palace and Parks, the former summer residence of the Prussian King Frederick the Great, nowadays the greatest World Heritage Site of the country.

  • Wannsee lakes

A favorite trip is the one to the linked pair of lakes called Wannsee: Both lakes are located on the river Havel and are separated only by the Wannsee bridge. They are the number-one bathing and recreation spot for Berlin, and the Strandbad Wannsee, an open-air lido features one of the longest inland beaches in Europe.

  • Stralsund

The former city of the Hanseatic League is situated at the southern coast of the Strelasund (a sound of the Baltic Sea separating the island of Rügen from the mainland). The Brick Gothic historic centre of this beautiful medieval city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
