Vienna, the city with the highest quality of life in the world, unites tradition and modernity in its own unique way. With 1.7 million inhabitants, Vienna is both Austria’s capital and its largest city — and the site of the first and only Humboldt-Institut program in Austria, where a truly charming dialect of German is spoken.
Besides the old town and Schoenbrunn Palace, both of which are UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, Vienna also boasts countless imperial residences and palaces, museums, famous buildings and landmarks, the most internationally known of which are St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Ferris wheel in Prater Park. Coffeehouses, Sacher torte, schnitzel Vienna style and the Naschmarkt — the city’s wide variety of attractions cater to every taste. Learn more about our German language summer program in Vienna!
A true highlight of this program awaits our students in class. Our German courses in Vienna are held at the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium, which is not a typical school, but is absolutely unique in Europe. It is a 189-meter long ship with a total of 36 classrooms. The fantastic location right at Danube Island and the unparalleled experience of having German lessons aboard a ship contribute to an unforgettable language course.
Our students live in the Guest House Wien-Brigittenau, Vienna’s most modern youth hostel. It is ideally located between Danube Island and downtown Vienna, which gives our students a blend of the atmosphere of the big city with the advantages of a quiet and safe residential area. The classrooms on the Bertha von Suttner school ship are within walking distance. The city center with its many historic and cultural sights can easily be reached during free time. The nearby Danube Island is an oasis of tranquility and is ideal for relaxation, sports and manifold leisure activities.
The bright and modern twin rooms all have en-suite bathrooms, as well as air conditioning.
We carefully choose the students who will share a room with each other. We take care to match roommates who have a comparable German language level and are of similar age, yet speak different native languages. This way we encourage them to speak and practice German with each other outside of the classroom. Boys and girls are housed separately.
Our students receive three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner).Breakfast and dinner will be served in the dining room of the youth hostel, while lunch will be served on board the ship.
Laundry service is offered to all students free of charge once a week for their personal laundry. Bed linen and towels will be provided and changed regularly.
A single summer course is not nearly enough time to fully enjoy all the many different options and opportunities that Vienna has to offer.
