Creative Christmas Projects in Bad Schussenried14. December 2018

In the last weeks of the year many projects at the Humboldt-Institut in Bad Schussenried are revolving around Christmas. Creative activities on offer were for instance crafting Christmas tree decoration, Advent wreaths and designing Christmas cards.

For all projects the Humboldt staff members first presented the general idea and the available materials. Students then developed their own designs and realized them in small groups.

During those activities, the students learn and use creative techniques while expanding their knowledge about German culture in general and Christmas customs in particular. A student group from Guatemala for instance didn’t hear about Advent wreaths until they created their very own in Bad Schussenried. Also for Ngan from Vietnam the creation of the Advent wreaths was her favorite activity.

When talking about Christmas in Germany, the Christmas bakery with cookies and gingerbread should not be left unmentioned. “My favorite activity was building our own miniature gingerbread house”, said Shayna from Indonesia. Other culinary treats the students crafted were cookies, colorfully decorated cupcakes and Stutenkerle (sweet pastry in the form of a man).

Aside from the creative activity, students learn new vocabulary and actively use it while working together. This way the creative projects help improving each student’s knowledge of German while offering a fun variation from learning in the classroom.
