Learn German at Lake Constance
Constance is a lively university town of 82,000 people and is located on the banks of Lake Constance (Bodensee). The city has a very attractive historic downtown area with medieval buildings. The many students make for a relaxed atmosphere in the city. Its wonderful location on the lake and the proximity to the Alps and neighboring Switzerland make Constance a course location that offers a wide range of recreational opportunities.
Thanks to the University of Constance, which is one of only 11 Germany Excellence Universities, the city has fantastic infrastructure for international students and offers a wide range of cultural events, such as concerts, theater and film festivals, as well as many bars, cafés, clubs, and restaurants.
This wonderful mix of history, nature, and young people makes Constance a great place to live and study.
Constance can be reached quickly and easily from Zurich Airport.
The language school for German in Constance
Our language school in Constance offers both short and long-term German immersion programs. The institute is open all year round and intensive German courses are available for all language levels from A1 to C2.
The course center in Constance is located in a modern, nicely furnished building, which offers all the conveniences of a guest house. All the classrooms are bright and large with up-to-date, high-quality equipment. Several common rooms provide space for learning outside of class or simply for relaxing with other students from all over the world.
Accommodation on campus is available in single and twin rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.
All German courses in Constance have a relaxed atmosphere. This is largely to the school’s convenient size and location, a mere 15-minute walk from Lake Constance and the University of Constance. The city center is also only a few minutes away by bus, but can also be reached by foot from the lake through a very beautiful park.
The Humboldt-Institut in Constance is also a licensed test center for the TestDaF and telc exams.

Accommodation
Our course students are housed in the same building in which the classes take place. Living on-campus offers many advantages: a short walk to class, ideal learning conditions and a family atmosphere.
Single and twin rooms
Students stay in single or twin rooms, all equipped with an en-suite bathroom. All rooms were renovated in 2022 and are modern and comfortably furnished. Each room has a TV and WiFi access. All rooms are also suitable for allergy sufferers.
When choosing students to share a twin room, we pay attention that the roommates speak different native languages. This way, we encourage them to speak and practice German with each other outside the classroom.
Full board
We serve three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in the school’s dining room. Our kitchen staff offers a varied and healthy diet and cooks all meals fresh every day. A fruit basket is available throughout the day.
Laundry
Bed linen and towels will be provided and changed regularly. For your personal laundry, there is a coin washing machine and dryer available.

Intensive courses
In Constance, the Humboldt-Institut offers intensive German courses with 30 lessons per week and one-to-one courses with 25, 30, or 40 lessons per week. The German classes in Constance are offered for all language levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2.
Students at the Humboldt-Institut learn in small classes, which consist of an average of 10 students and are taught by experienced teachers. This allows students to quickly improve their German language skills.
All intensive courses are also available as a full package including accommodation, full board, and after-class activities. This immersive concept is what makes the German courses of the Humboldt-Institut so unique and allows students to “dive” into the German language and culture. To improve your German, there’s no better way than a German language immersion program.

What is included?
All German courses with accommodation include all lessons, course materials, accommodation, full board, daily activity program, weekly excursions (except entrance fees) and a certificate.
All courses without accommodation include all lessons, course materials, and a certificate.
What is my level of German? You are welcome to have your German language level tested at our institute before your course starts. Please call to make an appointment for the test. Alternatively, you can test your German skills by taking our online placement test. Please note: the online test is only a rough guideline; it does not replace the placement test in the school.
Learners with previous German knowledge may begin a course on a weekly basis upon previous agreement and depending on the placement test results.
Grman exams in Constance
In addition to the courses, telc exams from B1 to C1 as well as TestDaF are also offered at the Humboldt-Institut in Constance. This allows students to prove their German language skills with recognized exams.

Our day of arrival is the Sunday before the course starts and the departure day is the Saturday after the end of the course.

Arriving by your own car?
The Humboldt-Institut is located north of the city center and has its own parking lot (free of charge).
Railway station
The Constance train station is 10 minutes by car or bus from the course center.
Airport transfer
If students wish to be picked up from the airport, we can arrange an airport transfer service for a fee from and to the airports Friedrichshafen and Zurich:

Leisure time
The city of Constance offers a variety of cultural events, shopping opportunities and sports facilities. We take our students at the beginning of their course on a guided city walk to learn about the different options available to them.
Our staff organizes and accompanies the daily leisure activities. German is always spoken during activities and excursions. This enables our students to use the language practically, which makes a decisive contribution to their learning success.
In addition, our staff is happy to help students with useful information and suggestions to help them plan their own free time. If our students have any special preferences — if, for example, they plan to see a particular festival, or to take part in the activities of a particular sports club — they are welcome to ask for our assistance.

Entrance fees are not included in the course fee.
Moreover, students at the Humboldt-Institut are entitled to participate in sporting activities organized by the University of Constance. During their term, they can choose from about 30 different types of sports. For our course students, the same conditions apply as for the students of the University of Constance.

Every Saturday, we offer full-day excursions to cities and places of interest that are included in the course fee (except for entrance fees). Possible destinations are:
Bildungsurlaub + German courses in Constance
Bildungsurlaub (educational leave) is a special form of vacation that serves vocational or political education. The German courses of the Humboldt-Institut in Constance and Berlin are recognized as an educational offer in Baden-Württemberg, Berlin and Brandenburg.

Constance and Berlin: two cities – one course
With the combination of courses in Berlin and Constance our learners have the opportunity to experience two uniquely distinct regions of Germany within a short amount of time.
On the one hand Germany’s capital Berlin, with more than 3.5 million inhabitants is the largest and most vibrant city in the country with a large variety of sights and cultural offers. Constance, on the other hand, is an unhurried and laid-back city of 85,000 inhabitants and is rated as having the highest quality of life in Germany due to its gorgeous location on the shores of Lake Constance and its proximity to Switzerland and the Alps.
Intercity bus transfers between the cities (Constance–Berlin or Berlin–Constance) is included in the course fee when booking two consecutive courses of a minimum of five weeks in each of the two cities.
