Accommodation

During their German course in Berlin our students may choose between two types of accommodation:

Student residence on campus

The students are housed in our residence in single, twin or on occasion triple rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. All rooms feature modern and comfortable furniture, TV and Wi-Fi internet access. Living on-campus offers many advantages: a short walk to class, ideal learning conditions and a family atmosphere.

Our all-inclusive course fees cover three meals a day as well as a selection of fresh fruit. Our kitchen staff offers a varied and healthy diet and cooks all meals fresh every day.

Bed linen and towels will be provided and changed regularly. For your personal laundry there are coin washing machines and dryers available.

Host families

In their host families, students will stay in single or twin rooms. Students will have breakfast with the family and either lunch at the school or dinner with the family. All host families have been carefully selected and are well-known to us. The commute time between host family and school may take up to one hour.

The concept of speaking German with the teachers and staff as soon as we arrive is a good idea. That’s how we learn and make new friends. You can’t ask for more!

With the combination of courses in Berlin and Constance our learners have the opportunity to experience two uniquely distinct regions of Germany within a short amount of time.

On the one hand Germany’s capital, with more than 3.5 million inhabitants is the largest and most vibrant city in the country with a large variety of sights and cultural offers.

Constance, on the other hand, is an unhurried and laid-back city of 85,000 inhabitants and is rated as having the highest quality of life in Germany due to its gorgeous location on the shores of Lake Constance and its proximity to Switzerland and the Alps.

The program at the Humboldt-Institut Berlin is absolutely amazing in every way, from the teacher and lessons, staff,... accommodations, activities and food. I am 50 years old and live in the US and I have recently become a dual US/DE citizen. Having no German language background, over the past year I have been learning the language on my own using both apps and audio courses on a somewhat regular basis. I was able to sneak away from my family and work for two weeks and looked online for a German course in Berlin to accelerate my fluency (or lack thereof).Teacher and Lessons: When I arrived, I was given a placement test which solidly landed me in the A1 group. The class consisted of nine other students from around the world, most of whom were university students studying German for the summer. The class was entirely in German, but the teacher spoke in a way that I was able to understand much of what she was saying and each day my understanding grew. She used lots of examples to describe what she was trying to say rather than mixing both English and German which was a huge plus. The classes started at 9:00am and depending on the day, ended at either 1:30pm or 4:00pm with perfectly timed breaks to rest or have lunch. The lessons consisted of a nice balance of group and solo work with a mix of listening, worksheets, group activities and paired discussions and interviews. The lessons built on various themes of common vocabulary and grammar which was great for me because the audio courses and apps I used really didn’t focus on the much needed and difficult grammar. There were also weekly tests to provide feedback to where your strengths and weaknesses were. Overall, the classes and lessons were engaging and very enjoyable.Staff: The staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant! When I arrived at the airport on a Sunday morning, I was greeted by a young man holding a Humboldt-Institut sign so right away, I felt welcome. When we arrived at the institute, I was checked in and given my room key fob and settled into my room. The staff at the desk is very helpful and pleasant, the teachers are great, the cooks are really really nice, and the activity staff were amazing. The director is a great guy and was very interested in how I was doing and was engaged in all areas of the classes and my stay here.Accommodations: I could not be more impressed with my room, the dining room and classroom. The building seems new or newly updated and is very modern, bright, and energy efficient. My room is a perfect size for me and has a nice desk, bed, terrace, modern bathroom and shower with great water pressure, and the room was cleaned and restocked a few times a week by friendly housekeeping staff. There is also a huge roof deck for hanging out on in the evenings. Lastly, the location of the Institute could not be more centrally located. You can walk literally anywhere. I was doing about 10-20K steps a day checking out the entire city either in a group, in a pair or by myself. The train stop is right in front of the Institute and there are tons of shops, grocery stores, barbers, restaurants, museums, and sights all within walking distance.Activities: Each Monday we were given a weekly calendar of various outings which changed weekly. There were typically two per day (afternoon and evening), from which students could join. The activity director Ida is amazing. She is fun, funny, interesting, and planned great outings. The trips varied from visiting museums, eating street foods, relaxing in parks, drinking at beer gardens, checking out different monuments, or just walking around the streets sightseeing.Food: The dining hall is large and a great place to socialize at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cooks were great to converse with, and the food varied from day to day with traditional German foods. I am not a picky eater, so I tried everything and I did notice they had a variety of food available for those with different dietary restrictions or needs.I cannot wait to come back in the fall!Alexread more

DISCLAIMER: Humboldt-Institut has in no way forced or asked me to write the following:I write this critique, not only... to state, publicly, my good and known opinion about Humboldt-Institut, but to respond in a direct way to @Hassan Ascher's critique, which is, top-to-bottom totally unfair and contains outright lies. When I arrived at Humboldt in Berlin, I had one basic goal: to learn German. This was not an easy task, since I knew 0 about German and what made me embark on such a difficult task to prepare my Law Master's dissertation. Especially during the pandemic. I arrived in November 2021. What endeared me first were the accommodations. The rooms are hotel-like: clean sheets every week, as well as a general cleaning of the room. The housekeepers are super friendly. Then comes the food: you have, for breakfast, a fully equipped buffet. The kitchen staff is always ready to help you. Since I have type 1 diabetes, from the day I arrived until now, food has never been a challenge for the Kitchen. They serve except what I need to keep my suggestion levels low.As for the classes, they range from 6 to 12 studs. Good luck finding another language school with these few students. Classes are stuck according to a placement test. I felt that my classmates were always more or less on the same page that I was on. The classes are really engaging and you can feel a great atmosphere. The conditions are really good and the tables and chairs are modern. The teachers are always ready to help you. You can count on excellent preparation for the exams and the road ahead. If you take the intensive course, expect a 30-hour class per week. But there are many other options.I have never experienced any kind of discrimination at Humboldt. I have had colleagues from all over the world. We are always treated as one: students. Not less, not more. You pay what you get. If the prices seem a bit high, you can very quickly get a calculator and do the math. A 9-month stay in Humboldt is much cheaper than staying in a rented apartment - if you can find one, that's to be expected, not counting food expenses (expect 70-100 euros per week, except for the supermarket only), 86 euros for a one-month pass for public transport and serverel others, wicht includes language school, materials. And you can't forget the excellent conditions that can be found here. All in all, you will find viel Erfolg (or many successes in German) in Humboldt.I simply cannot find Hassan Ascher's review to be true. There are, of course, mistakes, but that is part of the human condition. For my part, the Board always wanted to hear from me when I had problems. To sum up: if you want to learn German with a strong foundation, the Humboldt Institut in Berlin is the place for you! I can only thank Humboldt for all the support and help.Manuel de Albuquerque.read more

I'm a German professor at a small liberal arts college in the US. The students on our study away program take 7 weeks... of intensive German language to prepare for the second phase of the program (which includes some direct enrollment at a German-language university). This year, we unexpectedly needed to find a new languague institute for our students. After researching other options, we landed on the Humboldt-Institut Berlin, and I'm so glad we did. The students were all satisfied with their experience and raved about the classes (very small class sizes--excellent for language learning), the teachers, the housing, the food, the leisure program--pretty much everything. When I asked them what their favorite part of the experience was, many of them replied: "the people!"I'll just add this: directing a study away program during a global pandemic is hard, and one reason why we selected the H-I was because of the covid safety measures they have in place. Sure enough, several of the students in our program tested positive and had to quarantine for 7-10 days, but they were very well cared for during that time. I was grateful for the excellent communication that the Institut provided in this situation. Indeed, the group booking agent was incredibly responsive and kind throughout our entire collaboration and planning. I know my experience with the H-I is an indirect one, but I would highly recommend it, as would my students!read more

I spend 5 weeks in Humboldt-Institute in Berlin. I can recommend to anyone who wants to improve his German and... experience Berlin. I appreciated the most:- German lessons - Stefan was one of the best teachers I have ever met. I made big progress in speaking as well as in writing. I would need normally a year for similar progress.- organized rich leisure program that helped me get to know the whole Berlin (and also some other cities)- location of school - just next to the S-Bahn station and 20 minutes walk to many city highlights- “all-inclusive” catering. Always enough food and also taking into account dietary restrictions- nicely renovated and good equipped room- very friendly staff with a family atmosphere- I am no longer in my student years, yet I appreciated the inspiring contact with young people.read more

Molto raccomandataread more

I can't rate Humboldt highly enough. The placement test I took placed me perfectly, I felt, and I was able to start... mid-way through an A1 course with no problem. The teaching staff are very professional and friendly and even as an older student I felt completely comfortable there. The rooms are basic, but very clean and well maintained and the food was great. I'd have no hesitation in recommending one of their courses to anyone.read more

Very cool place to study German! In 2011 I studied at Humboldt in Bad Schussenried, but this time I chose Berlin... (because it’s for adults). We have very cozy and interesting lessons, teachers are very very friendly, kind and professional. In winter there are not so many students, but anyway it’s cool to study there. Staff and workers do the best to make lessons, free time and weekends fun and useful. Courses are really intensive and heavy, but you will speak German every day, you will learn much new stuff and you will meet cool people.Accommodations could be a little bit better, but rooms are fresh-repaired and rather big.I love Humboldt, the best German-school in Germany!read more

Also, nochmal danke schön, liebe Humbolt-Team !!!read more

Eu recomendo. 😉read more

After two months and a half at Huboldt, I think it is a nice school with a family feel. We got off on the wrong foot,... as I didn't expect their internal system of organising the classes, and I felt the progress was too slow. However, with the right teacher, one can learn a lot. I think that the full-time modality great for people 18-24 who don't live in Berlin. The classes can be interesting or not depending on the teacher, as in all other schools. One positive point for me was that one can usually sign up at any time and there is availability, which is unfortunately not true for the Goethe Institut. One MUST clearly understand their own system of advancing through levels, before deciding to sign up, as Humboldt is a pricey option.I remain a fan of Goethe Institut, but I can vouch that one can advance through the B2 levels in Humboldt within 9 weeks and feel the difference.I can't speak of the accommodation, as I didn't stay there. The food is quite good, tho.read more
