Child Protection at the Humboldt-Institut

At the Humboldt-Institut, child protection is a core part of our educational responsibility. Here, you’ll find key information about our safeguarding standards, reporting procedures, and how we work together to create a safe learning and living environment.

1. What does child protection mean at the Humboldt-Institut?

For us, child protection means…

  • Professional relationships: Clear boundaries between closeness and distance. Our staff act transparently and respectfully.
  • Safe spaces: Whether in class, during free time, or in accommodation – we design all areas to ensure children and young people feel secure and protected.
  • Support when problems arise: Every report is taken seriously, handled confidentially, and assessed by professionals.
  • Prevention: Regular staff training and clear rules for everyone.

Our safeguarding concept applies to all programs – whether at a year-round campus, summer courses, or homestay accommodation.

2. How do we ensure safety in daily life?

Closeness and distance

  • One-on-one conversations take place in open or visible areas (e. g., with the door open).
  • Physical contact is only permitted when pedagogically appropriate (e. g., comfort for homesickness) and always with respect for the child’s boundaries.
  • Bathrooms and living areas are protected spaces. Privacy is a priority.

Digital communication

  • Private contact between staff/student via social media or messaging apps is not allowed.
  • Photos and videos are only taken with consent and used for specific purposes.
  • Mobile phone rules are clearly communicated (e. g., no recordings in changing rooms).

Supervision and responsibility

  • Clear responsibilities in teaching, leisure activities, and accommodation.
  • 24/7 availability of supervisory staff.
  • Emergency plans for urgent situations (e.g., medical assistance, safeguarding concerns).

3. How can children and young people get help?

Code word: “Luisa is here!”

Children and young people can use the code phrase “Luisa is here!” if they feel uncomfortable. Our staff will respond immediately – calmly, discreetly, and without further questions.

4. What do we do if there is a concern or report?

Our procedure

  1. Take it seriously: Every report is documented and handled confidentially.
  2. Initial assessment: Our child protection officer evaluates the situation professionally.
  3. Protective measures: Immediate steps to safeguard the child or young person.
  4. External consultation: Specialist agencies are involved if needed.
  5. Communication: Parents/guardians are informed objectively.
  6. Aftercare: Support for all involved and improvement of our standards.

Advice for parents/guardians

  • Listen without pressing: Say, “Thank you for telling me” – this reassures them.
  • Do not investigate yourself: Avoid leading questions or confrontations.
  • Contact us: We’ll clarify the next steps together.

5. What can parents do?

  • Talk to your child about boundaries and asking for help – in simple terms.
  • Ask about local contact persons (listed in course information).
  • Use feedback options – your input helps us improve.
  • Encourage your child to speak up when they feel uncomfortable.

6. External help and emergencies

In acute emergencies

  • Call the local emergency number immediately:
    • 110 (Police)
    • 112 (Ambulance/fire brigade)
