The ”Zentrale Mittelstufen Prüfung” (ZMP) allows our students to prove that they have reached a high level of proficiency in non-regional, standard High German. The test demonstrates that students can use German confidently and express themselves appropriately in private, public and professional settings. It also shows that they are capable of understanding a variety of linguistically complex and thematically sophisticated, authentic texts and can express themselves in writing at a similar level.
The ZMP is acknowledged worldwide and is recognized by employers in many countries as evidence of an advanced level of general German language skills. Various institutions of higher education including, for instance, many universities in Switzerland and preparatory schools in Germany, recognize the ZMP certificate as evidence of German language skills sufficient to begin college coursework.
Students who have completed between 700 – 800 hours of coursework in German are eligible to register for the ZMP. For an absolute beginner at the Humboldt Institute, that translates to about 6 months of intensive German course, which would bring the student up to the end of level B2 according to the competence levels of the council of Europe. Students who already know some German would require correspondingly less coursework. And of course, as is the case with our other exams, we also prepare our students specifically for the ZMP. We hold the ZMP exam in cooperation with the Volkshochschulverband Baden-Württemberg.
