Foreign students who want to study at a German university have to prove "sufficient knowledge of German" before entering the university. The "German as a foreign language" test (TestDaF) is officially accepted by all German universities to fulfill this requirement. Students who receive TDN 5 (best grade) in all of the four test categories (reading and listening comprehension, oral and written expression), are exempt from taking the DSH university entry exam and fulfill the language requirements for admission at any German university. These students will also be awarded a certificate equivalent to the "Deutsches Sprachdiplom Stufe II", another recognized certificate of proficiency. Candidates who pass the four categories with TDN 4 or 3 may or may not be accepted (depending on their course of study or projects) by a German university; the university in question then uses its discretion in determining whether to accept the candidate. Apart from academic considerations, TestDaF is a valuable certificate for all those who want to work at high-level jobs in Germany and/or want to test their language skills in depth. TestDaF is held at licensed test centers. The Humboldt-Institut has two licensed test centers in Constance and Ratzenried. If students do not pass the exam on their first try, they can repeat the exam as often as they like. Requirements Students who want to take the exam need an excellent knowledge of German, i.e. after about 700 - 800 class hours. This is roughly equivalent to the end of Level B2 according to the competence levels of the council of Europe. In addition to our normal language courses, we offer special exam preparation courses for students who already have sufficient prior knowledge. These preparation courses run for four weeks.
