Famous for its Cologne Cathedral

Cologne is Germany’s oldest megalopolis and, with a population of just over 1 million, is the fourth largest city in the country. The impressive Cologne Cathedral, the biggest Gothic church in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, towers over the city on the much extolled river Rhine.

Wide range of cultural events

Cologne is known for its cheerful, cosmopolitan, internationalist, and tolerant spirit. It is also a center of art and culture, with over 30 museums and 120 art galleries. Especially in the summertime it offers a great variety of concerts, operas, dramas, musicals and open-air-events, and the Rhine beckons visitors to take walks, bicycle trips or boat rides along its winding course.

Youth hostel at the Rhine

We will be guests at the Cologne City Hostel in the Deutz district, on the right bank of the Rhine, right across the river from the main train station.

Modern building nearby old town

Our program center has just recently been built, so it is very modern, top quality and sets an amazing standard. It is situated in a quiet neighborhood, yet is still in the very heart of this lively city, just a very short walk away from the old town, where endless sights, museums, shopping and interesting events await our students.

Classrooms and accommodation in the same building

Our classes will be held in the attractive and bright seminar rooms of the City Hostel, which are all equipped with up-to-date technology. As our students are accommodated in the very same building where they have their classes, they can conveniently walk there from their rooms without having to leave the premises.

Modern hostel with comfortable twin rooms

Our students live in the Cologne City Hostel in the same building where their classes are held. The hostel is just a few years old and sets a very high standard, apart from amazing views of the Cologne Cathedral. Our students stay exclusively in comfortable, modern double rooms, which all have shower and bathroom facilities. When choosing roommates we are very careful to select people of similar age and German knowledge, yet different native language, to encourage them to practice their German with each other. Male and female students live on different floors or wings of the residence.

Within walking distance to the oldtown

Due to its location on the quiet right bank of the Rhine, yet still in the very center of the city, within easy walking distance from the old town, the City Hostel is the perfect place to begin exploring Cologne and its many sights.

Full board

We provide full board for our teenagers, which includes three main meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) a day. All meals are served buffet style in the very friendly dining hall.

Laundry

Laundry service is offered to our students free of charge once a week.

Cologne's great variety of leisure facilities

Cologne offers a vast variety of leisure activities, museums and sights, most of which can easily be reached on foot from our school.

Daily program for time after class and weekends

Our staff will organize a daily program of sports, games and/or cultural events for the time after class; this service is already included in the course fee. Our counselors will encourage all students to participate, while guaranteeing reliable round-the-clock supervision seven days a week. They will also take our teenagers on full-day excursions every Saturday; these may include a trip by boat on the Rhine, a visit to Bonn, the former capital of Germany, or to the cities of Trier and Dusseldorf. They will also arrange half-day trips every Wednesday afternoon, either to sights in and around the city, or to little towns close by.

A perfect location

Due to its wonderful central location within walking distance of all major downtown sights, the City Hostel is not only the perfect starting point for those who want to explore and discover Cologne, it is also a great and quiet place to relax after a strenuous afternoon in town.

Sample leisure activities and facilities:

  • Barbecues
  • Basketball
  • Billiard
  • Board games
  • Football table
  • Internet
  • Museum visits
  • Party room
  • Ping-pong
  • Soccer
  • Swimming
  • Volleyball
  • and many more activities or visits to typical Cologne sights

Full-day excursions

Every Saturday, our counselors organize and accompany full-day excursions. These events and the entrance fees are included in the course fee. Possible destinations are:

  • Aachen

The city is famous for its mineral springs and was historically the capital of the vast Frankish Empire of Charlemagne. The stunning cathedral incorporates Charlemagne’s original palace chapel and became Germany’s first Unesco World Heritage Site. Aachen shares borders with the Netherlands and Belgium, which gives the city its distinctly international feel.

  • Bonn

The ‘temporary’ German capital from 1949 until 1991 has been able to maintain the cosmopolitan charm of its political heyday, as well as the friendly, relaxed atmosphere it has always been famous for. It is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven and offers a lot for its visitors – not only its lovely riverside setting on the Rhine.

  • Duesseldorf

Known as “City of Culture”, is a posh and very wealthy modern city which dazzles with avant-garde architecture, including some very bold buildings by Frank Gehry. It also has an amazing art scene, but is especially famous for its beautifully restored historical quarter (“Altstadt”) along the Rhine.

  • Trier

The city was founded by the Romans in 15 B.C. and is home to an outstanding assortment of monuments from that time. It was also an important city in the 13th century and features some architectural gems from the Middle Ages as well. Its proximity to France and Luxembourg accounts for its international spirit.

Half-day excursions

In addition to the full-day excursions on Saturday, every Wednesday our students will be offered half-day excursions to sights within the region, to interesting locations in Cologne itself, or even a trip on a steam boat along the Rhine.

Reliable supervision guaranteed

Wherever we take our course participants, we guarantee reliable supervision during the trip.
