Access to university in Germany

Indirect admission means that you will have to take a two-semester foundation course (Studienkolleg) and pass an assessment test before you can apply at a university.

Before you can begin your studies at a German university, you have to prove that your German language skills are sufficient.

  • For applications at the Studienkolleg (indirect admission), an intermediate level – usually a completed B2 level – is required. A student with no prior knowledge of German can reach this level in 25 weeks at the Humboldt-Institut.
  • If you are granted direct admission, a C1 level is necessary and your proficiency has to be confirmed by a successfully passed TestDaF (4×4) or telc C1 Hochschule exam. A student with no prior knowledge of German can reach this level in 35 weeks at the Humboldt-Institut.

If you are eligible for direct or indirect university admission depends on your foreign educational qualifications and certificates. If you have questions regarding university admission and the required level of German, please send a message to info@humboldt-institut.org. We’ll be happy to help!

Important information about the visa

Language students who require a visa and who plan to study in Germany following their German course must deal with relevant issues such as the purpose of the visa, health insurance and blocked accounts before applying for a visa. The Humboldt-Institut will be happy to advise on these topics to ensure a smooth process.

For more information on German courses suitable as preparation for studying in Germany, please visit the page „Intensive German Courses“ or contact us.

Where do our former students study?

Many international students have successfully been prepared at the Humboldt-Institut for direct or indirect admission to the following universities and institutions of higher education: Charité Berlin, Technical University Dresden, Goethe University Frankfurt, University of Marburg, LMU Munich, TU Munich and many more all over Germany.

What is my level of German? You are welcome to have your German language level tested at our institute before your course starts. Please call to make an appointment for the test.
