 | The venerable cathedral town Cologne, idyllically situated on the much extoled river Rhine, is a perfect example for the co-existence of millennia old history and the modern life of a progressive city. Founded as early as 38 B.C. it was the famous seat of the archbishops and an important Hanseatic City in the Middle Ages. Today’s town scape is characterized by the impressive Gothic cathedral. Cologne is a metropolis of art and culture, with over 30 museums and 120 art galleries. Especially in the summertime it offers a great variety of concerts, operas, dramas, musicals and open-air-events, the many cosy pubs invite to sup a typical „Kölsch" beer, and the Rhine attracts to take walks, bicycle trips or boat rides along its winding course.

 | This 3-week course with 25 lessons per week and 5 - 10 students per class will be held in the building of the University of Cologne, founded by citizens in 1388 as the first municipal university. As a summer course for university students the lessons will be taught at an academic level and will be adjusted to corresponding expectations. Apart from grammar we will also integrate topics like German history, politics and culture into our practice-oriented communicative instruction.
The course serves levels A1 - B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference.

A monthly ticket of the municipal transportation company of Cologne is included in the course fee. Accommodation is in single or double rooms, all equipped with private shower and toilet, television and fridge.

 | Cologne offers an immense variety of cultural events like theater, movies, music and dance, as well as many sports facilities. We will organize day-long excursions on Saturdays, including a trip by boat on the Rhine, with a visit of the famous castles on the rolling hills along that world-known river, as well as a visit to the former capital of Germany, Bonn, which conserves the charm of a small town and at the same time still is the meeting-point for international celebrities. All leisure time activities that are organized by the Humboldt-Institut are included in the course fee (with the exception of entrance-fees), as is the above-mentioned monthly ticket for public transportation in Cologne.
